Background Information

Relationship problems, disagreements, bullying and cyberbullying (the use of cellphones and e-mail) is, unfortunately, a growing problem in schools.
At Darfield High School we have implemented the Cool Schools Peer Mediation Programme to help with the prevetion of violence, bullying and disputes.
We currently have 23 Peer Meditors at Darfield High School, from Year 7-13.

Youth 2000 (University of Auckland)

A survey was completed by Youth 2000 on how violence impacts on the health and wellbeing of young people and the factors that are associated with their exposure to violence. The report also discusses the role of protective factors in the lives of young people exposed to and involved in violent behaviours.

Reasons for being bullied

Of the students who were bullied, 56.7% reported that they did not know why they were bullied, but 5.4% said it was because of their
size or body shape, 13.3% said it was because they are smaller than other people, 24.3% said it was because of their ethnic group or culture,
and 7.5% said it was because people thought they were gay.
